WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento River Cats left-handed pitcher and San Francisco Giants top pitching prospect Kyle Harrison was named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 22-28. Over the last seven days the San Jose, Calif. native made two starts against the Oklahoma City Dodgers and did not allow a run in 7.2 innings of work, yielding a single hit while striking out 14.
Not only is this the second such honor for Harrison in 2023, both awards have come in the month of May as he first was tabbed the Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 1-7, making him the first River Cats pitcher since at least 2018 to achieve the feat. In total Sacramento has earned three weekly honors this season, matching the three they also collected in 2022.
First taking the mound against Oklahoma City on May 23, Harrison went 4.0 strong innings, scattering three base runners without allowing a hit while punching out a season-high nine hitters. The next time out he was solid again against the top team in the PCL, striking out five more on May 28 over 3.2 innings while yielding one hit.
In each of his last eight starts Harrison has struck out five or more batters, which is currently the longest active and tied for the longest such streak in all of Triple-A. Overall this campaign, the southpaw has allowed just seven earned runs in his 11 starts, logging a 3.67 ERA in 34.1 innings of work with 61 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .151 batting average. To this point in his professional career, Harrison has produced a total of 404 strikeouts in 246.0 innings pitched.
Drafted by the Giants in the third round (85th overall) out of De La Salle High School in Concord, Calif., Harrison entered the season tabbed by Baseball America as the top left-handed pitching prospect in baseball. The 186 strikeouts he amassed last season ranked second in the minor leagues. He represented the Giants at the 2022 Futures Game at Dodger Stadium.
