Selected in the 1st round of the 2022 MLB Draft (No. 4 overall) by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of Mays High School in Atlanta, Georgia... signed with the Bucs on July 29, 2022 when he was handed a slightly over-slot bonus of $7.2 million... was a shortstop in high school and got a little time there during his brief pro debut in 2022, but MLB.com projects him to be a second baseman moving forward... the 18-year-old was ranked by MLB.com as the No. 26 overall prospect in baseball entering the 2023 season, making him the highest-ranked Pirates prospect on MLB's Top-100 list... split his first season in the Minors with the Bucs' rookie-level Florida Complex League team (9 games) and Single-A Bradenton... he hit .222 with a homer, 6 RBIs, 6 steals and 6 doubles in 63 at-bats over 23 games.

His brother, Tervell Johnson, also played baseball at Mays before joining Georgia Tech, where he appeared in 3 games as a freshman in 2021... Tervell's high school career saw him ranked as the No. 12 outfielder in Georgia and included two high honorable mention Perfect Game All-American (2018, 2019) selections.
