Ballers Ride Shutout Outing on Mound in 6-0 Victory over Woodies

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Backed by a combined four-hit shutout and three total home runs by the offense, the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers picked up their second straight victory Tuesday in a 6-0 win over the Down East Wood Ducks at Atrium Health Ballpark.

LHP Tommy Sommer started on the mound for Kannapolis, tossing a masterful outing of 4.1 innings. The Carmel, Indiana native picked up seven strikeouts, allowing no runs on two hits, walking three along the way. Tuesday marked Sommer’s ninth start of at least six strikeouts on the season.

RHP Chase Plymell (W, 2-3) relieved Sommer in the fifth, continuing the shutout on the bump for Kannapolis with six punchouts of his own. Plymell did not walk any batters and gave up just two hits on the evening.

Kannapolis started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, going ahead 1-0 on a DJ Gladney sacrifice fly that scored Wilber Sanchez to give the Ballers the upper hand early.

RHP Gavin Collyer (L, 1-2) earned the start on the bump for the Wood Ducks Tuesday, putting together a solid performance until the seventh inning, allowing four runs on five hits, striking seven out and walking just one. LHP Juan Mejia relieved Collyer in the eighth, allowing two more runs in his one inning of work, strking out one and walking one.

The Ballers found their stride at the plate in the seventh inning with a pair of home runs. Gladney smoked a towering fly ball into right-center to make it a 2-0 Kannapolis lead. Three batters later, Benyamin Bailey lined a hard-hit ball into the berm in left field with Colby Smelley on base to pick up his second home run of the season. With the two home runs, the Cannon Ballers forced Down East to make a pitching change while trailing 4-0.

IF Colson Montgomery gave the Ballers insurance runs in the eighth inning, smacking his fourth home run of the season to extend his on-base streak to 20 consecutive games. The Holland, Indiana native’s home run scored James Beard on the play, pushing the Ballers ahead 6-0.

Following the series opener, Kannapolis will look to extend their winning ways to three straight in the second of six games at Atrium Health Ballpark this week against the Down East Wood Ducks on Wednesday evening. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m., with Bark in The Park festivities planned for fans of the two-legged and four-legged variety.

RHP Cristian Mena will start on the mound for the Ballers. The righty is 1-2 with a 3.54 ERA on the year.
