Amarillo, TX – The Amarillo Sod Poodles (23-27) racked up 13 hits and stole a franchise-high six bases in a 8-4 win over the Midland RockHounds (23-27) on a sellout crowd for Luau Night on Saturday.
Starter Deyni Olivero kicked off the evening with a perfect 1st inning, and the Sod Poodles went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the frame.
Midland scored the first run of the game on a leadoff home run in the top of the 2nd. A single and a walk then put runners at the corners, but Olivero retired the next three to hold the RockHounds to just one run.
After the home run, Amarillo tied the game and took the lead with a run in the 2nd and 3rd. They tied the game in the bottom of the 2nd off a pair of two-out hits. Nick Dalesandro singled and stole second base, and Roby Enriquez scored him on an RBI double.
In the 3rd, Corbin Carroll singled and advanced to third on a wild pitch and a throwing error by the catcher. Jorge Barrosa then gave the Sod Poodles the lead, scoring Carroll with an RBI single.
Dalesandro and Enriquez teamed up again in the 4th to give Amarillo a 3-1 lead. Once again with two outs, Dalesandro doubled and scored on an RBI single from Enriquez. The duo went a combined 4-for-4 with two runs plated through the first four innings.
Olivero settled in after the home run in the 2nd and allowed just three baserunners over the next three innings. He allowed back-to-back singles to lead off the 6th and was relieved by Cam Booser after 5.1 IP.
Booser recorded one out before allowing a three-run home run that gave Midland a 4-3 lead. The homer added two more earned runs onto Olivero’s final line of 5.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, 6 K, and gave him a no-decision. The three earned runs tied his season-low and the six strikeouts tied his season-high.
The Sod Poodles loaded the bases and tied the game in the bottom of the 6th. Alexander, Dalesandro, and Enriquez reached on three straight singles, and Elvis Peralta tied the game at 4-4 with a sacrifice fly.
Amarillo reclaimed the lead with a run in the 7th. Corbin Carroll singled to lead off the inning and stole both second and third base. The next two batters were retired, but he gave the Sod Poodles a 5-4 lead by scoring on an error off a ball put in play by Ti’Quan Forbes.
With two outs in the bottom of the 8th, Corbin Carroll added insurance runs with a three-run homer that scored Enriquez and Peralta. The home run made it 8-4 and capped a three-hit day for Carroll. It was also his team-leading 13th of the season.
Jeff Bain tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless ball and handed it off to Blake Rogers, who struck out the side in the 9th.
Amarillo out-hit Midland 13-8, their first time out-hitting the RockHounds in the series. Roby Enriquez led the way with four hits, and Nick Dalesandro and Corbin Carroll each recorded three. The Sod Poodles also set a franchise record with six stolen bases tonight and recorded double-digit hits for the first time since May 19.
The Sod Poodles and RockHounds will conclude the series tomorrow, Sunday, June 5 with first pitch at 6:05 PM. Brandon Pfaadt (2-2, 3.97 ERA) will be on the hill to face Matt Milburn (3-3, 6.23 ERA) for Midland.
Have A Day-ni: RHP Deyni Olivero had great stuff tonight and turned in one of the best starts of his Double-A career. He tied his season-low with three earned runs and tied his season-high with six strikeouts. He was in line to earn his first Double-A win when he exited with a 3-1 lead, but two runners he was responsible for came in to score on a three-run homer that gave Midland a 4-3 lead. In his six-year minor league career, the Dominican Republic native owns a 3.85 ERA and a 23-15 record.
Corbin Barrels: OF Corbin Carroll, Arizona’s No. 1 prospect, put together a 3-for-5 performance tonight with three RBI, two stolen bases, and three runs scored. He singled and scored in the 3rd, singled and scored after stealing second and third in the 7th, and gave Amarillo insurance runs with a three-run homer in the 8th. Tonight was Carroll’s 16th multi-hit game and his 8th multi-RBI game of the year, and the home run was his team-leading 13th. On the year, the Seattle native is batting .301 with a team-leading 13 home runs and 17 stolen bases.
Rockin’ Roby: OF Roby Enriquez had the best game of his young Double-A career tonight, going 4-for-4 with two RBI, two stolen bases, and a double. He became just the fifth Sod Poodle to rack up four hits this year, tying the team season-high. The quartet of base knocks set a new career-high for him as well in his first minor league season. He signed with Arizona in December of 2021 out of Indiana State University and batted .351 in 87 games for the Boise Hawks of the Pioneer League in 2021.
Nick At Nite: OF Nick Dalesandro was a force at the plate tonight and turned his best offensive performance of the season. He racked up a season-high three hits with two runs scored and a stolen base. Tonight was the 6th time in his minor league career that he’s notched a career-high three hits. On the year, the catcher and outfielder is batting .272 with 16 runs scored and is batting .333 (8-for-24) over his last six games.
Why Was 6 Afraid Of 7?: Batting 6th and 7th, OF Nick Dalesandro and OF Roby Enriquez were the life of the Sod Poodles offense tonight. The duo of outfielders went a combined 7-for-8 with two runs scored, two RBI four singles, and two doubles. Dalesandro singled and scored off an Enriquez double in the 2nd inning, and they added another run off a Dalesandro double and an Enriquez single in the 6th.
Grand Theft Amarillo: The Sod Poodles set a new franchise record tonight with six stolen bases. Corbin Carroll and Roby Enriquez each stole two, and Nick Dalesandro and Elvis Peralta both added one. Carroll leads the Sod Poodles and ranks 3rd in the Texas League with 17 stolen bases. This was the third time in the last five games that Amarillo has stolen three bases giving them 68 (1.4 per game) on the year.
On The Board: 2B Elvis Peralta recorded his first hit and RBI as a Sod Poodle tonight. His first base knock came on a single in the 4th and his first RBI was a sacrifice fly in the 6th that tied the game at 4-4. The former Oakland prospect recorded a .212 batting average with 19 RBI across three levels of the Athletics organization in 2021.
Hit Me Baby One More Time: The Sod Poodles racked up 13 hits tonight, their first time with double-digit hits since May 19. They out-hit Midland 13-8, their first time out-hitting the RockHounds in the series. The team has been flawless when the bats are active, and they improved to 16-0 when out-hitting their opponent this season. The 13 hits are tied for the 9th-most by the Sod Poodles in a game this season.
Free Bases: The RockHounds committed four errors as a team tonight, tying the most by a Sod Poodles opponent in franchise history. This was the third time in history that an opponent has had four errors, and the first time since June 2, 2019. It set the season-high by an opponent this season, passing the three errors that have been committed twice.
